On behalf of local charity organizations, the mayor accepted the gift comprising 4,000 tickets to an upcoming charity basketball game. The tickets were donated jointly by Yao Foundation, Taipei City Government, Cathay Financial Holdings, and Bros Sports Marketing.
The mayor pointed out that both the Tianmu Baseball Stadium and Taipei Arena have met the standards for holding Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Basketball Association (NBA) games. Taipei Arena was chosen as the venue in Taipei for the exhibition match between Indiana Pacers and Denver Nuggets last year. He recalled that even NBA Commissioner David Stern spoke positively of the facilities.
Hau hopes to convince NBA to hold a regular season game in Taipei, citing the enthusiasm of local fans and the support promised by city hall. He urges Yao to bring the message back to the association, giving locals a chance to witness these top competitions in Taipei.
Local sports fans have been treated to a series of exciting events over the past year, including oversea exhibition matches featuring NBA and MLB teams as well as visits by sports superstars such as Yao and Dwight Howard.
