- City Introduces Smoking Ban, Renovated Facilities at Jianquo Holiday Markets (2010-07-20 10:22)

To prepare the ground for the Taipei International Flora Exposition slated for November, the city government set aside NT$60 million for the renovation works at the Jianquo Holiday Commercial District. The renovated marketplace was also named as the city’s first smoke-free shopping district.

On July 17, Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin attended the ceremony marking the unveiling of the renovated facilities and the commencement of the smoking ban. Other dignitaries participating in the ribbon-cutting ritual included mayor’s wife Kao Lang-hsien, the Department of Economic Development Commissioner Chen Hsiung-wen, the Department of Health Commissioner Chiu Wen-hsiang and representatives from the four market self-governance organizations.

Speaking at the event, Hau pointed out the flower market, the jade market and the arts/culture special area (three sites constituted the Jianquo Holiday Commercial District) are attractions suitable for leisure shopping activities. He and his wife frequented the markets every month. With the completion of the renovation project, the jade market and the arts/culture area were equipped with air conditioning. A sprinkler cooling system was added to the flower market. The mayor thanked the residents and the shop owners for their understanding of the inconvenience caused by the construction works.

Hau also served as the one-day salesman at the refurbished site, auctioning off a wide range of merchandises, including tea products, potted plants, jade bracelets and other goods. The event organizers also prepared gift vouchers for the customers participating in the ceremony.
